Story
Two years after Commander Shepard repelled invading Reapers bent on the destruction of organic life, a mysterious new enemy has emerged. On the fringes of known space, something is silently abducting entire human colonies. Now Shepard must work with Cerberus, a ruthless organization devoted to human survival at any cost, to stop the most terrifying threat mankind has ever faced. To even attempt this perilous mission, Shepard must assemble the galaxy’s most elite team and command the most powerful ship ever built. Even then, they say it would be suicide. Commander Shepard intends to prove them wrong.

Gameplay
An space-based action RPG like its predecessor, gameplay in Mass Effect 2 revolves around the player's particular version of Commander Shepard and continuing development of this character as the game proceeds. As the game opens a variety of character classes are made available to the player, with talents, both exclusive and general, associated with each. With experience these talents are leveled up, resulting in the unlocking of related abilities and/or entirely new talents. The player has the ability to customize their Commander Shepard in a number of ways including physical appearance, gender, and certain aspects of their personal history, with the rub being that these choices can influence things like available missions, dialogue choices with non-player characters (NPCs), and character background.

Accompanying this main character are a number of preset supporting characters that the player can direct and develop relationships with, which again, will alter the outcome of the story. All the characters from the original game make an appearance in Mass Effect 2, but the immediate characters surrounding Commander Shepard are new. Additional new features that players can expect to experience include new alien races, a more realistic damage system, a new heavy weapons system allowing for maximum damage, a regenerative health system, a dramatic increase in the number of character animations available to Shepard, and updates to the dialogue mechanic used when conversing with NPCs.

Integration with the Original Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2 allows players of the original Mass Effect game to import save games to continue the story of their own Commander Shepard. In doing this, the decisions that were made in the first game will affect the events of the second game. In addition, characters from the first game will return as long as they were not killed off by the player in the first game. On the other hand, new players coming to the series for the first time in Mass Effect 2 will start a brand-new character, discover the events of the previous games a they progress and embark on a thrilling stand-alone adventure that does not require the previous game for play.

Key Features

  • Futuristic Weapons - Choose from 19 different weapons, including devastating heavy weapons that can end a battle in seconds.
  • Elite Specialists - Recruit up to a dozen of the galaxy's most dangerous operatives to help you in your mission. Train and equip your team to survive insurmountable odds.
  • Explore the Galaxy - Scan planets to uncover unique secret missions in the Mass Effect universe.
  • Integration with Original Mass Effect - Players of the first Mass Effect can import save games to continue the story of their own Commander Shepard. New players will find a thrilling stand-alone adventure awaits them, a polished and action packed journey that surpasses the first game in nearly every possible way.
  • Intense Third-Person Combat - Increased intensity with precision shooter controls to let you control the action and overcome insurmountable odds.
  • New Damage System - New location based damage system allows for targeting of key weak points, blasting off limbs, igniting enemies, or cripple and disable enemy troops.

5 out of 5 stars Epic   August 31, 2010

Im not going to write a long review for this game because i don't need too. If you have played the first one you will love the second. If you haven't played the first you can still play this but will not have the back story and you won't be able to import your character from the first. Give this game a chance if your into FPS, RPG or have ever played KOTOR.

5 out of 5 stars The reviews speak for themselves   August 29, 2010

IGN recently crowned this game the top game on the Xbox 360 platform to date, it's won multiple awards and it has a strong chance of being the best game of the year. You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A sure contender for 2010 Game of the Year!   August 25, 2010

The first Mass Effect was a fantastic sci-fi adventure that has become one of the defining games of the Xbox 360. Therefore, expectations were very high for Mass Effect 2, and most pleasantly, this game exceeds the first in just about every conceivable way! Bioware has truly outdone themselves in fleshing out the Mass Effect universe and in creating a cast of characters that truly have a life of their own.

The game starts out with a bang, in the form of a jaw-dropping opening sequence that had me staring at the screen in disbelief. The story gets better from there as we're introduced to the Illusive Man (played expertly by Martin Sheen) and get familiar with working for the Cerberus organization. What follows is roughly 30-40 hours of sci-fi perfection. In what is probably a first in gaming, your choices and decisions that were made in the first Mass Effect carry over into this game (using your completed save file from the first game), noticeably molding the state of the universe. This is astounding. Characters that died in the first game are remembered, your love interests from the first game act accordingly when you meet them in this game, and the attitude of the characters reflect what you allowed or disallowed in the first game. It's truly remarkable, considering all the variables from the first game. If you never played the first game, or never finished it, the game defaults to a standard set of circumstances. But to know that you had a direct impact on how your Mass Effect 2 experience rolls out is a wonderful thing. Plus, throughout Mass Effect 2, you make several key decisions which you know are gonna come back to haunt you in the inevitable Mass Effect 3!

Gameplay-wise, it's important to point out that the RPG elements of the first game have been drastically scaled back. Gone is the micromanaging of weapon upgrades, omni-gel, and the detailed leveling up mechanics that the first game relied on. When a character gains a level, you can only upgrade one of four attributes. Weapons are upgraded using a simple system where you can level up only their general effectiveness, with no options. While this may turn off some of the fans, I personally found this change to be a wholly welcome one. It streamlines the game so you can concentrate on the action. And this leads me to another gameplay change. Missions are more shooter-based than they were in the first game. A very effective cover mechanic has been introduced and aiming and shooting is more fluid and responsive. Basically, though I hate to say it, it's reminiscent of Gears of War. The overall mission structure, however, is just like in the first game, so it definitely still has the feel of Mass Effect. Returning from the first game is the dialog wheel, only this time it's more interactive and is designed to make the dialog flow smoothly. It works flawlessly and you feel more engaged in the conversations than ever!

Mass Effect 2 is more of a character piece than the first game. The number of playable characters doubles from that of the first game, but unlike that game, you have to make the characters loyal to you lest you suffer the consequences. This, in my opinion, is where the game falters a bit. The main story really only encompasses 4 or 5 missions. The rest are made up of "loyalty missions", which are basically requests for help that your squad members ask of you. They have nothing to do with the main story, though they do serve as excellent backstory for your comrades. So essentially you do a mission to recruit a character, and then do their loyalty mission. This results in a rather disjointed experience since you can only partake in the main story (which is nothing short of excellent) in only small bursts. This is kind of a double-edged sword though, since by the end of the game where you must select team members to perform certain tasks, you really feel like you know them well. Not since Final Fantasy VII have I felt so familiar with the characters in a game. The loyalty missions aren't bad, I just wish they were more integrated with the game's overall story.

It's probably a no-brainer that anyone who liked the first Mass Effect probably already got the second one. But if you haven't played either game, I strongly suggest you play the first one first. It's a wonderful thing to shape your own game experience, and I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on that! Mass Effect 2 is definitely one of the best games of 2010, and probably the best on Xbox 360 for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Some holes in the storyline - otherwise excellent   August 18, 2010

I wish Amazon would allow decimal ratings. Mass Effect 2 doesn't deserve a perfect score, but it also doesn't deserve a 4/5 rating. ME2 is a masterpiece, at least by video game standards, notwithstanding some holes in the storyline. The dialogue is delivered well, probably because it's so well written (again, by video game standards), so the voice actors don't have to be embarrassed to speak it. The voice acting and character design are so well done that the player can almost imagine the characters leading an independent existence when the power is switched off. No, it's not high drama, but it's pretty good for a game. ME2 is a game adults can enjoy without feeling childish.

If I have one gripe with ME2 it's that it doesn't integrate the first game's storyline well. For instance, at the end of the first game, Reapers are seen flanking the Citadel. The sequel doesn't explain what happened to them after you defeated Sovereign. Did the Citadel fleet destroy them? Seeing as how one ship gave them so much trouble, that seems unlikely. Moreover, even if you chose to kill the alien council in the first game, there is no interaction in ME2 between Commander Shepherd and the human council. This seems strange, considering Shepherd put them in power.

The choices you make in the first game that carry over into ME2 don't seem all that momentous. I was led to believe, by interviews with the game's designers, that choices made in the first game would give way to alternative storylines and missions in the sequel. Playing the original game would be like travelling back in time to alter the future by altering the past. Instead, all that happens is some characters from the last game pop up to reminisce about the good 'ol days (that is, if you didn't kill them). Big deal. This is such an interesting concept for a game that I'm surprised the designers didn't do more with it.

Apart from these criticisms, the game looks and handles beautifully. The weapons menu is easy to master and attacks are easy to execute. If you enjoyed the first game, the sequel will exceed your expectations.

5 out of 5 stars An Epic Sequel   August 17, 2010

If you enjoyed the first game, then there's really not way that you won't also enjoy this game. And if you have played the first game you can import your character, and all the decisions you made are carried over to this one, I was surprised at how my decisions from the first game showed up so many times in this one. It improves on almost every aspect of the original. Gameplay is much much better, especially the combat. The graphics are some of the best on the 360 (where as the original tended to be somewhat blurry). The 6 different character classes are now more differnetiated, each having their own unique power; and the way tech and biotic powers are used is also much improved, I fought in many battles where I never fired my gun. The only real criticisim is that there are a lot of unanswered questions as far as the story goes; hopefully this will be resolved with the 3rd game

Pros:
Better graphics
Better gamplay/controls
Tech/Biotic power usage much improved
Importing ME1 character

Cons:
Mining mini-game
