ASUS Does NOT honor their free Accidental Damage Warranty August 22, 2010 Rox 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
ASUS promises an Accidental Damage Warranty and even includes the registration card in the box. You are instructed to send it in POSTMARKED within 60 days of purchase date but it's the wrong address. When the registration card comes back to you marked not deliverable as addressed and you call ASUS (OUTSOURCED TECH SUPPORT-GOOD LUCK!) THEN they tell you that it must REACH them within 60 days of purchase date. Plus they tell you that you are supposed to register online and why did we attempt to send it. Well perhaps it was because the registration card did not indicate that it was no longer the incorrect address nor did it state the need to only register online. I have been a long time buyer on Amazon and J&R Music (the Amazon seller) have both been good in the past. Due to the product not being "as described" in the ad I have requested to return it for a full refund and am waiting to see how these two companies treat their customers. I don't want to keep the computer because if ASUS won't honor their agreement up front then I don't want to deal with them in the future when I really need them. It's a nice little computer but I rely on good tech support when I buy cameras and computers and I won't EVER purchase another ASUS product again. If you don't care about tech support and don't mind hold times of 45 plus minutes and being shuffled from person to person for more waits when you call-then it's a nice computer. If your time is too valuable to waste on hours of hold and nothing done....go with a company who cares for their customers.
Impressed! August 19, 2010 David Jansen (Fresno, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Very impressed. As light as a netbook with enough power and screen real estate to replace a full-fledged notebook. Vibrant screen, 4-5 hours of battery life in High Performance mode, quiet and cool. Can't say enough about this laptop for the mobile warrior.
Best laptop I have had so far!!! August 9, 2010 Gnr1fan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this laptop! It is super light and has even more gadgets than my old huge Compaq. It looks like a netbook but with a lot more power. I bought 2 and my husband and I love them. The new Windows 7 is very easy to use. One of my favorite things in this laptop is the zoom in and out that can be done with your fingers on the mousepad (just like the iPhone)! It is the coolest thing ever since you don't have to sacrifice your eyes for the size of the screen. The battery life is amazing, I only need to plug it in at night if I have been using it all day. When I don't use it as much I can leave it unplugged for 2 days. Will recommend to anyone!
So Far So Good! August 4, 2010 Dino 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this ASUS UL20A-A1 computer after reading every thing I could on laptops on the internet. My last two computers were Dell and HP. I had seen ASUS computers in stores, but figured they were some cheap knock offs on the standard computers I was used to. After reading about them from the consumers point of view, using Amazons user's reviews to do so, plus going to BEST BUY and trying out their ASUS computers(they didn't have this particular one at that store--mostly the smaller eee netbooks, which drove me crazy because of having to move the screen back and forth to view the whole page of the internet) but I did like the 14" and 13" ASUS computers they had on hand. After fooling around with them, I decided that ASUS appeared to be a fairly good product. I noted that the ASUS UL20A-A1 has been on the top seller list for longer than most laptops, plus the 4.5 stars awarded by the consumers was a favorable factor. I read and reread every one of the reviews more times than I like to admit. The price of the UL20A-A1 was, also, nice. $539.99. Down from what it was a year before at $599.99. I could have afforded the 13" product or even the 14" product, but for some reason this little 12'1" notebook called to me. So I went ahead and ordered it. Yet, even while waiting for it to arrive, I kept on reading about the computer, wondering if the screen was going to be big enough to encompass a whole internet page at once. I read up on the SU7300 Core Duo Prosessor. I learned a lot more about processors than the average computer user knows, I'll bet. I perseverated myself into insanity on inhling as much knowledge as I could about the ASUS UL20A-A1. However, I remained nervous, thinking maybe I'd made the wrong choice--buyer's remorse settling in. But what did worry ever get you, right? Everything turned out well. I love this little laptop--the 7.5 hours is only if you put it on certain settings. I'm not willing to do that because it compromises other things that I don't want to give up. So I bought an auto adapter. That way, unless I have to be in a five hour class, I can recharge it while I drive around. The battery fully charged gives me an easy 5 hours. I did buy the extra two rams of GB. And I had BEST BUY install WORD 10. But it's cheaper to buy it on the internet. I didn't need all of OFFICE. I write a lot and word is all I need, presently. The guy who helped me at BEST BUY said it was the nicest little computer he'd ever seen. The print on the internet is not as small looking as I thought it'd be. I have no trouble reading it at all. I don't know what you're looking for in a computer, but this is just right for me. Light weight, professional looking, easy to carry. I found the ideal carrying case that is as slim-line and professional looking as the computer. I have had this this computer for about 6 weeks now. I don't use the touch pad as much as I use a mouse. Even in the car, I use the mouse on a book that sits right next to me. But when I do use the touchpad, I find it smooth and comfortable. I read that this has been a complaint with many other owners. I like this computer. If that changes, I'll let you know. For now, so far so good. I'm happy with it.
2 weeks in, doing great July 1, 2010 Aaron Price 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Only owned the thing for 2 weeks, but so far, so good.
Good Stuff:
-Haven't let it stay on for 7 hours straight, but it looks like w/ brightness at minimum it could probably make 7 hours. Just took it on a car trip, and battery life wasn't a problem.
-I have no issues whatsoever with the touch pad. The texture makes you realize when you accidentally move off the pad, and I didn't find it "sticky" or irritating to use at all. Some also complained about the click bar being hard to click. There is one bar for both left and right clicking, so there is a "pivot" point in the middle that is very difficult to click. Just press closer to the edges. Synaptics "ipod-style" scrolling is great once you get the hang of it, but I also downloaded the newest software from the Synaptics site to let me do 2-finger scrolling. Both work well and I use them both regularly, depending on the distance I need to scroll.
-Windows 7 has been good to me so far. (coming from XP)
-Very pretty, very light.
-LONG power cords. Awesome.
-Performance: Great. I installed Photoshop CS3 and Flash CS4, and both run without a hitch, even simultaneously. Haven't tried installing any real videogames on the thing yet (screen is so small, not sure how enjoyable it would be), but the preloaded games already there run fine, and a few 2D games I've downloaded work fine as well.
Weird Stuff:
-ASUS must have had to use a dump-truck to load all that useless... crud... onto my computer. At least 20 programs with ASUS in the name were already present, and there were several other useless programs more confusingly named. It was very difficult to decide which I should remove. I ended up removing most of them through the control panel, except for "AI recover" (seemed actually NOT-useless, but haven't used it yet), and the "control panel," which allows you to adjust all you brightness, volume, and battery-type stuff in one place.
-The quoted 250 GB is split between two drives, one called "OS," (50 GB) and one called "DATA" (200 GB). Not really an issue, but the desktop is located within "OS," so no putting giant files on your desktop. I think when a program is installed, it uses "OS" space, but I don't know. It is still a mystery to me whether there are actually two physical drives in this computer, or one partitioned drive. I'm unclear on the reason they would do either. Again, not really an issue, but still kinda weird.
-Remember, no CD/DVD drive. Allows computer to be slimmer and lighter, but to install software you will either need to download it, or use an external optical drive. You probably don't want to buy this computer for watching DVDs in the car, unless you want a big external dvd drive hanging off it that whole time.
There doesn't seem to be much out there in the way of cases for this size of computer, but I found this one:
"Kensington K62569US SP12 12-inch Neoprene Sleeve for Notebook Computers (Black)"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001M4HXT4/
and it's working great.
So, two weeks in, *5/5*
Hope it doesn't break after 366 days.
