The UL30A is complemented with Altec Lansing speakers--30 percent more powerful compared to those found on conventional notebooks--and SRS premium surround sound, providing high-quality audio playback without the need to connect to external speakers. (You'll also find them on the Start menu.) What you see in a Jump List depends entirely on the program. The Jump List for Internet Explorer 8 shows frequently-viewed websites. Windows Media Player 12 lists commonly-played tunes. Your Jump List missing a favorite? You can "pin" whatever files you like there. Jump Lists don't just show shortcuts to files. Sometimes they also provide quick access to commands for things like composing new e‑mail messages or playing music.

Improved Windows Taskbar
In Windows 7 you can "pin" favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. Not crazy about the icon lineup? Now you can rearrange them any way you like by clicking and dragging. Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews--a big time saver.

Snap
Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again--and your windows are back.

4 out of 5 stars Asus Ul30-A2   September 5, 2010
R. E. Paulino (Bronx, NY)
Well, I am a college student traveling abroad for the junior year abroad. I needed something lightweight with a really good battery. I previously had a 15" VAIO and let me just say that it heated up really fast, was really heavy and the battery was crappy. After carefully looking at laptops for almost two months, I decided to go with this Asus. I knew it did not have a disk drive or bluetooth, but I never used them in my other laptop so it was not something that I was going to miss.

I bought the laptop from J and R Music after comparing it to other laptops in the store. I always convinced because of the Amazon reviews, I decided to risk it and buy it.

Once outside of the box, I turned it on and did the set up which was pretty easy to do. However, once set up the laptop was really slow when running programs such as Firefox, or Itunes etc...I am not really good with laptops so I thought that doing the whole set up again would work, and it didn't. If it wasn't for contacting ASUS through the phone was it that I was able to figure out the problem. It is not suggested to have more than one anti-virus program running. Asus already comes installed with an anti-virus called Trend Micro, I installed McAfee. I suggest going with McAfee and un-install Trend Micro. Once this was done, the laptop has been running really fast, which I am glad of.

I really enjoy the key board and the fact that it does not have a disk drive does not bother me at all, you can easily transfer files. Also, the laptop although it has great components, looks like it could die at any moment if it fell from any height so it is advised to buy a really good cover for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Laptop!   August 28, 2010

I've been using this laptop for about a month now, and am very pleased.

The battery life is simply fantastic. I haven't drained the battery yet, but I estimate it will give 9-10 hours of typical use - surfing the internet, working with documents, etc.

I like the keyboard. The trackpad is a little sticky, and the mouse buttons a bit hard to press, but these idiosyncrasies are not enough to lower my review score. I've always used the keyboard whenever possible to avoid having to use the mouse anyway, so maybe that's why trackpad / button issues don't affect me overly much.

The form factor is great - perfect for me. I bought a Brenthaven 13" Ecco-Prene Sleeve to tuck the laptop into for my backpack, and it fits perfectly. Much, much lighter than trying to lug my 15" MBP around, with its terrible battery life. Build quality is good - I haven't noticed the "flex" that other reviews have mentioned.

I've also more or less gotten used to Windows 7, which I think is pretty decent. I don't like the recent trend of widescreen displays - I'd rather have a 4:3 aspect display, which is better for viewing source code - but docking the Windows taskbar on the left has allowed me to reclaim some valuable vertical screen real estate.

Overall, this laptop is a great value. At $650 currently, you can't beat it!

5 out of 5 stars best laptop ever   August 28, 2010

I really can't think of anything negative to say about this wonderful laptop.

- The battery life is phenomenal. I no longer have to get to class 20 minutes early to hunt down an outlet. The battery lasts me the entire day. I had a great time trying to run out the battery with wifi on, web browsing, microsoft word, chat programs, etc. and I got 9 hours out of it. That is AMAZING.

- First thing I noticed was how gorgeous this laptop is. The silver top is so shiny and actually doesn't attract fingerprints.

- Its lightweight. When I'm lugging around 3-4 textbooks, binders, etc, a laptop that's 2.5 lbs lighter than my last one is really nice.

- Windows 7 is infinitely better than Vista (on my old laptop)

- The screen is so bright I have to put it on one of the lowest levels so that the brightness doesn't give me a headache. This is actually great cause it conserves battery life :P

- The keyboard feels great. It's not cramped at all, and unless you're a hard typer who smacks down the keys, there is no flex.

- The touchpad is one of the better ones I've used. It'll be a bit hard to use when you first get the laptop, but once you get a bit of finger grease on it, it's extremely smooth. The few multi-touch options that come with the laptop are useful: double finger scrolling up/down and left/right.

- There's a fast-boot option to boot into a tiny linux desktop with webbrowsing, file stuff, music, etc. Boots in ~10 seconds. It works great when I tested it out, but I've never actually had to use it. The regular windows 7 OS boots in ~30 seconds which is good enough for me.

- Wireless works perfectly, very good range.

- I've dropped this laptop twice from couch-height onto hardwood/stone floors. Everything still works perfectly and there's only minor hairline cracks along the frame. I couldn't believe it.

Overall, I love this laptop and once this one wears out, I will buy the next generation product that Asus puts out because their products are perfect.

3 out of 5 stars Defective Hard drive   August 27, 2010

I received mine and it seems to have a defective hard drive. It is super slow and makes a lot of clicking sounds. The morning after my first use, it would turn on and freeze once the desktop background was up. Still, I am getting it replaced since I am betting that without this problem it would be a nice computer. It is really small and light. I would spend more time on my review, but don't know too much about how a non-defective computer runs and I am at work.

4 out of 5 stars Nice looking, Very quiet, and Fast.   August 17, 2010
Victor
After much researching for a portable college laptop I finally decided on getting this one, the acer Timeline X was my second choice, the MSI X series are nice and thin too, and Lenovo Edge is also good. I chose this laptop mainly because it looks great, packs more power than mostly any other laptop this size and the battery life is said to be an amazing 12 hours, although I expected less because of what i read in reviews.

Ok to start off it does look pretty good. I like the keyboard its chicklet style, it has a short travel distance and it almost feels as big as a desktop keyboard. For typing I think im really going to like using the chicklet style because the travel is so short. I didn't notice any flex in the keyboard so far so that should be noted, but i did notice some flex in the aluminum top and the front of the computer where you rest your palms, but i only felt the flex there when i pushed it at a weird angle with some force so during normal use you won't notice that. I do expect the flex though
because they had to make the parts thin to get it at this weight and size. Other than that its solid. The track pad was bad at first but get some finger grease on it and its smooth, much better than I was expecting from people's reviews. I suggest going into the mouse settings and changing the settings though, for me I had to put the pointer sensitivity all the way up and lowered the double finger scroll sensitivity all the way down and now its very usable. I have read before that the three finger right click doesn't work good and I agree, it only works like once out of the four times that I try it so its pretty much useless, but two fingers is always responsive.

I expected it to be a little thinner, but I've been spoiled by the new zune hd and my brothers ipad. It's NOT crazy apple or zune thin, but for laptops I guess this is very thin. It IS however very fast, I havent noticed any slowdown and everythings been going really fast. So far however I have only used it for internet purposes which is not very stressful on system resources. But 4gb of ram and a dual core is really great. If you want to watch video however at resolutions of 360p and up you are probably going to have to run the computer on high performance mode which is where a small problem lies.

I multitask online a lot, I have a lot of tabs open and surf quickly online and the battery has gotten around 10 hours doing that. But when it comes to high resolution video like hulu or youtube hd I had to use the high performance mode which drained my battery more, im guessing probably less than 7 hours watching videos continuously. Thats good but not 12 hours. This is to be expected though, watching videos online uses a lot of wifi and processing power. Also the only time I have ever heard the fan was when I was playing video, this laptop is incredibly quiet the only thing i can usually hear is a tiny noise from the hard drive. I also should mention that this laptop is very cool but the top left has to not be blocked or it will get hot quick.

Its not a negative, just something to consider, any high resolution video I tried watching without using the high performance mode showed stuttering. What IS a negative to me though is the software to change through performance settings is flawed. I would press the button in the corner and sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't, the screen said it changed settings but my videos would continue to be choppy. I recommend choosing a setting at start up and staying with it, or if you want to change settings later maybe minimize everything and make sure the settings have changed. Also there are some really dumb games and useless software installed, aka "bloatware." It bothers me that I have to uninstall that junk.

Overall I really like this laptop, it looks great and its very fast for surfing the web. If you take care of it, it should last. And 500gb is a crazy amount of space for something as thin as this.

Other stuff: The screen is very glossy but only noticed outside or where there are streaks of light in a dark room. Silver version doesn't show many fingerprints. The version with switchable video cards might be better for watching videos but im not sure, it might use up the same amount of battery life or more. The webcam kinda sucks. The buttons are nice and the leds on the front aren't "in your face." Screen should have better viewing angles but its good enough I guess. The Speakers are made by altec lansing, im a bit of a audiophile and i think with the srs setting set to "movie" setting with the laptop on a desk or other flat surface it sounds pretty good. Its not as high quality as my desktop computer but it is nice to listen to and gives off a deep warm sound. Turn off srs however and its complete rubbish, no depth at all. I also don't like listening to music using the headphone jack with my headphones or exterior speakers, it just doesn't sound as good as my zune hd. Maybe with some tweaking I can get a better sound. Also the Acer Timeline X has Dolby Digital stuff installed, it might be better than the SRS stuff on this one but im not sure.
